01What is a cost-recovery surcharge?
A separate, clearly labeled charge that recovers only the extra amount a specific cost increase is adding per job — for example, a fuel surcharge when diesel jumps. It doesn't add profit on top, which is what makes it easy to explain.
02Should I add a surcharge or raise my prices?
If you expect the cost to come back down, a temporary surcharge is easier to remove later. If it looks permanent, folding it into your base price is usually cleaner. MarginShock shows you both numbers side by side.
03Is it legal to add a fuel surcharge?
Businesses can generally add a clearly disclosed fuel or cost surcharge, but existing contracts, industry-specific rules, and state consumer-protection laws can limit how and when you do it. Disclose it before the customer is billed. This isn't legal advice — check your contracts and local rules.
04Where do the numbers come from?
From you. MarginShock doesn't guess market prices — it uses the costs, usage, and job counts you enter, and shows every step of the math.
05What happens to the numbers I enter?
Calculations are stored so you can come back to them, and anonymously to build industry benchmarks. Individual business numbers are never published or sold. Benchmarks are only shown as aggregates once enough businesses contribute.
