(Surcharge % of price)

Diesel price vs. fuel share of revenue

Surcharge = fuel share × (current price ÷ $3.50 − 1). It recovers the added fuel cost and nothing more. The highlighted row is closest to this week's U.S. average.

Fuel surcharge table questions

Source: U.S. Energy Information Administration, weekly U.S. No. 2 diesel retail price. Not financial or legal advice. Check your contracts before changing prices.

01How do you read a fuel surcharge table?

Find the row for the current fuel price and the column for how much of your revenue normally goes to fuel. The cell is the percentage to add to your price to recover the increase from the baseline price. If fuel is 10% of revenue and diesel goes from $3.50 to $5.25, that's a 5.0% surcharge.

02What baseline price should I use?

This table uses $3.50/gal, roughly where U.S. diesel sat before the 2026 spike. If your prices were set when fuel was at a different level, use that price instead. The calculator lets you enter any baseline.

03How do I find my fuel share of revenue?

Divide a normal month's fuel spend (at the baseline price) by that month's revenue. Hauling and delivery businesses are often 10–25%; most service trades are lower.

04Is this the same as a trucking fuel surcharge (FSC) table?

It works the same way: the surcharge steps up as a public diesel index rises above a base. Trucking FSC tables usually charge cents per mile. This one gives a percentage of your price, which suits small service businesses that bill per job.

05How often is the current price updated?

The highlighted row uses the U.S. average retail diesel price the EIA publishes weekly, refreshed automatically.
